To get the ball rolling, call or send e-mail telling us what type of business you have, and what, if anything, you already have in mind for a web site. We will get back to you with any specific questions we need answered, and with pricing and options. While you are waiting to hear from us, give some thought to the following concepts:

In creating your web site you need to give consideration to what you want the site to accomplish. If it is an adjunct of an existing offline business, the marketing will vary somewhat from that of a business that exists only online. A site that sells music CDs will vary from a site that is used to promote a band. A site that sells software might want people to be able to download a demo copy of the software, and an artist's site might want to make it as difficult as possible for anyone to download (or print) anything. Some sites' sole purpose is to give information to existing clients. Such a site would be more concerned about the ease of finding information within the site, than with finding the site through the search engines.

Once you know what you want your site to do, you need to consider who your market is. Are you targeting the whole planet, as this site is, or do you need to target a geographic location? If you own a video rental store in Orange, New Jersey, getting a hundred hits from folks in Orange, NJ will be more valuable than getting a million hits from Europe.

Besides the "where" of your market, we need to consider the "who". Are they males 24 - 44 or are they golfers or rock fans? If you are marketing an exercise video tape for women, you would want it to be listed under "exercise video" (1,892 listings in AltaVista) but you might also want it to come up under "new mother", where there are more listings, but less exercise listings and where most of the searchers will be potential candidates for your product. In this case, you might want to do one page on your site, devoted to the benefit of your product to new mothers, and then make sure that it gets the appropriate listing. (Note: this is intended to be only a brief overview of how promotion through the search engines works. It is a simplistic example of a complex process.)
