Your Domain
Name
If you are interested
in getting a domain name and do not yet have one, use the following form to check the
availability of the name. Please enter the name you would like, including one of the
extensions, ".com", ".net", or ".org". A query will be
performed on InterNIC Registration Services database.
It is not necessary for you to have your own
domain name. Cybergalleries.com has many domains under which we can put your site.

Domain names are the part of
a URL (web address) after the "www". The domain name of this site is
"cybergalleries.com".
A domain name is like a
phone number or social security number, once it is assigned to someone, no one else can
get the same one. It is not necessary to have a domain name in order to have a web site.
You can have a "sub-domain" on one of cybergalleries domains, which would make
your address look something like http://www.you.cybergalleries.com or http://www.cybergalleries.com/you.
If you have a business name
and are considering using it as a domain name, it is suggested that you register it NOW.
Many people are being disappointed daily as they realize the name of their business is
already taken. This is especially important if you have a business that is already well
known by name. You do not want your customers to have to look you up in a search engine,
where you may be the 1001st listing, instead of just being able to enter www.yourname.com,
and finding you. Companies such as Purina, Nike, Ford, an Pepsi, all can be reached
through www.companyname.com. Until recently, Coke, could not because someone else had
registered the name coke.com first. I do not have information on how much money Coke
actually had to pay to get the name, but it is a safe bet that it is more than you want to
spend.
There are other advantages
to having your own domain name. If your web site is one that "lives" in a space
provided by your local service provider or online service, you will not only have a long
unwieldy URL, but a less credible one. For example, if you build your site in the
"free" space provided with your AOL account, your URL would be:
http://members.aol.com/screenname/filename.html. Not only is this too long for anyone to
remember, but it is obvious to those familiar with the web that this is a "free"
space, and makes your business appear more "Fly-by Night" than having a name
that you actually own.
Another advantage of having
your own domain name is that whatever service provider, hosting service, etc. you decide
to use, your URL will remain the same. If you switch providers you will not lose your
name, nor will you lose any traffic that your promotional efforts have generated.
Domain names are currently
registered through InterNic, at the cost of $70 pre-paid, for the first two years, and $35
a year thereafter. Cybergalleries.com can register your domain name for you when you
contract with us for any of our services. |
